Eat the Freaking Donut 🍩

This morning we made a choice.

Not a particularly nutritious choice.

Not a low-carb choice.

Definitely not a choice that would earn us a gold star from the wellness coach.

We chose donuts. 😂

Mr. B went out and picked up a couple of ridiculously fresh ones, and when he came back, I sat down with my coffee and ate mine.

And darn, it was good!

No guilt. No calculating how badly I had screwed up my day. No dramatic promises about never doing it again.

I just ate the freaking donut.

Wellness is supposed to help us live

I care about my health. A lot.

I want to be strong. I want muscle. I want energy. I want to carry Miss Focus down some forgotten Oklahoma road, squat down for the shot, get back up again, and keep wandering.

So yes, most days I make choices that support that.

But somewhere along the way, I think we've made wellness terribly complicated.

Eat this. Never eat that. Fast this many hours. Count this. Measure that. Optimize everything.

Good grief!

At some point, you have to actually live in the body you're working so hard to preserve.

So I ate it. Then I moved.

By 9:23 this morning, I'd gone for a little walk and even done a bit of indoor running.

Not because I needed to punish myself for eating a donut.

That matters.

I moved because that's what I do now.

I'm building a stronger body. I'm using it. And one donut doesn't erase any of that.

In fact, maybe the ability to enjoy one without turning it into a three-day guilt festival is part of being healthy, too.

Make room for living

Maybe wellness isn't about making every perfect choice.

Maybe it's about making enough good choices that there's plenty of room left for living.

For the unexpected breakfast.

The glass of wine on vacation.

The afternoon sitting by the lake when you could have been “productive.”

The sunset you stop everything to watch.

The morning when somebody you love says, essentially, Want a donut?

Sometimes the answer should simply be:

Hell yes! Get me a fresh one. 🍩

Then enjoy every bite.

And afterward?

Get up.

Use your body.

Use your day.

Use your life.

Because that's the whole point of taking care of ourselves in the first place.

Carpe the damn diem — and occasionally, eat the damn donut.
